Bathtubs Refinishing Tips on Materials

Can Plastic, Acrylic, or Fiberglass Bathtubs or Shower Stalls Be Refinished?

Is it possible to perform bathtubs refinishing on acrylic or fiberglass tubs, this is what many of our AAA - Perma Ceram Bathtub Refinishing clients ask us. So we have written this post to explain things.

The answer to this question is yes. Most acrylic or fiberglass bathtubs or even shower stalls can be refinished with a great level of success when done by a reputable and experienced bathtub refinishing company.

Many people believe these tubs or shower stalls cannot be refinished, however, although there are a couple of differences in the procedure when compared to the steel or cast iron tubs, plastic tubs or shower stalls can be resurfaced, just as long as the products used are the proper ones. This procedure is known as refinishing, resurfacing, or reglazing. For shower stalls, it would be shower refinishing, resurfacing, or reglazing, which is basically the same.

Among the topcoats used by reputable professional refinishers, we can mention 3 main groups, which are polyurethane, epoxy, and acrylic polymers. Some manufacturers will even use a combination of all 3 in the pursuit of better qualities. Most of these topcoats are 2 part substances that when mixed, create a chemical reaction that hardens and crystallizes to create a higher level of resistance to humidity, exposure to the likes of soap, shampoos, and other chemicals.

There is also one myth around bathtub and shower refinishing, which is most people believe that they are unable to remain in the house the night after the procedure is performed. This is not true. All the professional bathtub reglazers will use a powerful exhaust system during the entire process to vent all the fumes out, which means that even though there is some smell, especially for the first few hours, just keeping the bathroom door closed will be enough.
